IM NewsWatch has a problem. Several other sites copy our content wholesale (without asking permission). We noticed it because they try to get us to backlink to their copy, which we never do. In ordinary times Google scans our site for new content frequently, so it knows we are the original source. The imitation copies probably give the culprits no SEO benefit, because Google doesn’t like duplicate content.

Sites like these get what they deserve, a cold shoulder from Google. This is a result of the most recent Google algorithm changes, Penguin 2.1, also known as Hummingbird.

But what about your site? If you ever outsource content creation, your supplier may have found some content elsewhere and passed it off as their own when they sent it to you. You may have duplicate content on your site, without ever knowing it.

Another way you may have inserted duplicate content is by using a Spinner to create content for your site. If a hundred people use the spinner, the chances are that yours is a duplicate or near-duplicate of other content around the web. If so, you may be penalized.

There are dozens of horror stories of people who thought they were playing by Google’s rules and found out they were wrong when Google dropped them off of their privileged first page position, onto a page never viewed by the average searcher.

Kevin Byrne noticed this problem on his own site and wanted to make sure he wasn’t penalized so he determined to find a solution. The result is his new WP Dupizer plugin.

This tool systematically sniffs out duplicate content on your site. In it’s basic version, it will search all the pages on your site to make sure you haven’t inserted duplicate content anywhere on the site. You may have created two posts that are nearly identical. If so, WP Dupizer plugin

will warn you, and if you choose, will delete one of them.

In fact, the basic version of this plugin does all of the following:
• Checks whether any of your pages or posts is a duplicate of another
• Deletes any pages that are than that percent duplicates, based on a percent you select
• Lets you manually delete or edit a suspect post
• Alerts you if a post is shorter than Google respects

You can have WP Dupizer plugin running in just a few minutes, and it can be keeping you out of trouble a few minutes later. You don’t want to get on the bad side of Google, and

If you want even more protection, there is an OTO that upgrades your review results to include duplicate content from anywhere in the web, not just your own site.
