Search engine marketers have multiple job functions, according to a research conducted by Jupiter Research and sponsored by iProspect. According to the study, search marketers perform about five jobs on average apart from search engine marketing.

Key findings of The iProspect Search Engine Marketer Job Function Study include:

“¢ 58% of search marketers also perform website design, apart from search engine marketing.
“¢ 57% of search marketers perform email advertising.
“¢ 28% search marketers are involved in print advertising to drive traffic to websites, 22% are involved in direct mail, 9% in radio, 7% in TV and 4% in outdoor advertising.
“¢ 26% perform IT functions.

Robert Murray, President of iProspect, said: “While this finding was troubling ““ given the complexity of the medium and the quality of the results it delivers — it may only be reflective of the limited pool of experienced search engine marketing talent available in the marketplace, and the need for some organizations to develop this skill set internally.” [Source]

The study revealed that website design and email advertising are the most cited non-SEM job functions performed by search engine marketers.
