The rate of spam has increased 2% in January 2006, compared to January 2005, according to a report by Postini.

The total amount of spam quarantined by Postini for January increased 73%, to 4 billion.

According to Postini, they filtered 2.2 million IM conversations in February. The worms that were stopped include FakeMSN, Lamo.Worm and Loxbot.

In February, 150 million messages were quarantined, which accounted for 82% of all messages.

Andrew Lochart, senior director of marketing for Postini, said: “The increase in spam was due to an increase in tax preparation offers and other financial service offerings that are more prevalent as we approach April 15.” [Source]

Postini revealed that 1.5% of all email in February contained viruses. According to Postini, they stopped 40,185,146 viruses in February.

The top 5 viruses for February, according to Postini, were:

MyTob 18,314,716 blocked

bagle 6,071,791 blocked

netsky 5,428,218 blocked

bankfraud/Phishing 2,869,819 blocked, and

Swen 2,813,100 blocked.

The amount of phishing decreased 65% in February compared to that of January. Phishing volumes in February totaled 2,869,819.
