Jeffrey Brett Goodin, 45, from California, was arrested for allegedly sending scam emails to AOL users.

He allegedly claimed that he was an employee of AOL’s billing department. The emails prompted AOL subscribers to divulge personal and credit card information. The information was later used to make credit and debit card purchases.

Many of the subscribers received the emails from EarthLink accounts that had already been updated. The email contained a web link. Once a customer clicked on the link, a page appeared that claimed to be from AOL’s billing department.

“Authorities allege that several computers seized from Goodin’s residence on June 30, 2005 contained more than 100 profiles with credit card numbers, account numbers, and names and addresses.” [Source]

Goodin has been charged with wire fraud and unauthorized use of a credit card in connection with an alleged phishing scheme. An arraignment date has been set for Feb 13, 2005. If convicted of both charges, Goodin faces 30 years in federal prison.
