VerticalResponse has introduced a Registry Compliance Program in response to the laws passed in Utah and Michigan about emails to minors.

The law requires the states to create and operate email address registries to protect children from promotional emails about products and services restricted to minors.

Email senders are required to match their mailing lists against the registries every month to make sure that they don’t send unauthorized content. For this, email senders are required to pay a per-email-address fee. Violation of this law requires them to pay a penalty ranging from $5,000 per message up to $250,000 in Michigan and $1,000 per message in Utah.

VerticalResponse has introduced a Registry Compliance Program to make sure that clients who send mails to Michigan or Utah are protected and abide by this law. The Registry Compliance Program offers a data scrubbing service that abides by the registries.

Clients need to join the program to have their email lists scrubbed against the registries. The scrubbing is done on a monthly basis. If any matches are found within the registries, they are blocked and the client won’t be able to send mails to that address from the VerticalResponse account.
