The U.N. World Summit discussed internet governance as one of the key issues of the Information Committee. U.S will remain incharge of the internet addressing system.

The ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) controls the internet, in the U.S. The ICANN controls all the top-level domain names and internet addresses.

The summit’s original intention was to address ways of improving communications technology to the rest of the world, especially the poorer parts of the world.

Michael D. Gallaghar, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce, said, “The onus now lies with the developing world to bring in not just opinions, but investment to expand the Internet to their benefit.” [Source]

Negotiators in the summit agreed to create a forum which can be used to raise and address important internet issues. The forum will give nations a better say in the internet domain, for example, by making domain suffixes available in other languages such as Chinese, Urdu and so on. The forum could also be used to address other issues such as spam and cyber-crime, which are not addressed by ICANN.

The Internet Governance Forum will start operations in 2006. The first official meeting of the Forum would be opened by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
