The OSDL, Open Source Development Labs, has launched an online patent commons reference library. The library enables developers of open source software to search the OSDL databases.

The searchable OSDL database allows developers, users and vendors to view patent data on open source software and standards.

Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL, said, “The OSDL Patent Commons Project is an important first step in helping customers, vendors and the development community understand the different commitments that have been made and how they work to reduce the chances of patent litigation.

The Project is focused on documenting the growing number of pledges and other legal solutions directed at the software patent issue, so that developers can innovate and collaborate as free as possible from litigation.” [Source]

The Patent Commons website will catalogue existing patent commons from companies who want to keep ownership of their patents. Additionally, the website will also provide information on different types of pledges and covenants.
