Google has launched Google Analytics, free tools to analyze advertizing campaigns and website traffic patterns.

Brett Crosby, Google Product Marketing Manager, has said, “The tools and services of the web analytics world give businesses precise information on what customers want, so that they can improve their online marketing and website content”. [source]

The service was expensive and only the fortune 500 companies were using it. Google acquired Urchin which was offering this service and reduced the price from $600 per month to $199 per month. Now Google has made the service free and accessible to all website publishers.

The Fees and Services section of Google Analytics has said, “the Service is provided without charge to You for up to 5 million pageviews per month per account, and if You have an active Adwords campaign in good standing, the Service is provided without charge to You without a pageview limitation”. The question everyone is asking is what Google is getting out of this. Eric Peterson of Jupiter Research has blogged about “the most likely benefit to Google”.

According to Peterson the benefit “is the reinforcement of ties to the online business community. They’re already targeting these folks with AdWords, AdSense, the Google Search Appliance and Google Mini, now they’re going to provide critical business insights via analytics at the best price possible”.
