eBay is going to announce that software developers need not pay a fee for developing websites and software programs that directs customers to ebay. eBay was charging a fee earlier.

Greg Isaacs, director of the eBay developers program, said, “We hope to encourage new ideas and accelerate the growth of our developer and affiliate communities”. [source]

According to the company’s data, ebay “has 168 million registered users worldwide. There are 89 million eBay International users and 79 million eBay U.S. users.

Profitable since its launch, eBay net revenues totaled $1.106 billion in Q3-05. eBay International achieved net revenues of $408.9 million in Q3-05”.

The fees ebay charged the developers was not a significant source of revenue for the company. The fees ranged from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands.

Those who use ebay’s web services include small players as well as major companies such as SAP, Verizon and EarthLink.
