A European Union study of Internet use has revealed a digital divide among Europeans. The age, income and education determine whether the continent’s citizens use the Internet.

The Eurostat study findings are:

During the first quarter of 2004, 85% of students used the internet. They were aged about 16 or more, studying in school or university.

About 60% of employees used the internet.

About 40% of the unemployed and 13% of the retired used the internet.

Only 25% of those with at most lower secondary education used the internet.

This increased to 52% for secondary education, and 77% for tertiary education.

Some of the causes for low internet use include:

missing infrastructure or access
missing incentives to use information and communications technologies
lack of the computer literacy or skills
