Google has launched a beta version of Google Local for Mobile. U.S. Mobile users can view local areas on map, search for specific locations, get a satellite image and click on a phone number to call.

The service is available only in the U.S. and it is necessary to download Java applications.

Some U.S. mobile phone users who can download the application are:
Cingular Wireless LLC, Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA Inc.

Some who will not be able to use the application are:
Verizon Communications Inc., Alltel Corp. and U.S. Cellular customers

BlackBerry and Palm devices are not supported.

“Combining directions, maps, and satellite imagery, Google Local for mobile is a free download that lets you find local hangouts and businesses across town or across the country – right from your phone”. [source]

The new service has inspired Matt Waddell of Google Mobile Team to write a song, “Get Lost and Found on Phone”:

“Walkin’ ’round a new town,
looking for a way around.
Askin’ locals for their thoughts
’bout nearby Chinese restaurants…
they tell you to get lost —
get lost and found on your phone.

Take Google Local on the go,
get listings, maps and aerial views.
Call directly from your search results
and even keep search history too.
Download from Google today.”
