Google has changed Gmail to Googlemail in the United Kingdom because of a trademark dispute with a research firm, Independent International Investment Research, IIIR. The research firm has a service called “G-mail”.

The company’s Press Release in its update on Gmail issue has reported, “The Company has maintained pressure on Google since April 2004 to cease its use of the trade mark, which is the subject of a number of trade mark registration applications in the USA and Europe. The Company’s own G-mail web-based email service was launched more than two years prior to Google’s service of the same name, and the Company has been concerned by evident confusion created amongst prospective clients”. The IIIR hopes that the company will be able to arrive at a settlement with Google.
