Sophos has reported a sharp drop in North American spam, but U.S., South Korea and China still account for more than 50% of spam.

Sophos has reported a sharp drop in the spam messages sent from computers in North America. The North American spam has dropped from 41.50% to 26.35%.

According to Sophos the reduction is due to factors like jail sentence for spammers, tighter legislation, and better system security.

But over 50% of spam are sent from United States, 26.35%, South Korea, 19.73% and China, 15.70%.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said, “There are fortunes to be made from the dark side of the internet, and spammers who are finding it harder to sell goods via bulk email are likely to turn to other criminal activities.

What the chart reveals is that spammers and virus writers can exploit unprotected computers anywhere in the world to send out their unwanted messages – everyone has a part to play in the fight against spam”. [source]

Sophos recommends the following to protect computers from spam:
keep anti-virus software up-to date,
use a properly configured firewall
instal the latest operating system security patches
