Hackers are producing smaller and modular codes of limited initial functionality which can download other codes to cause damage.

According to Symantec Corp.’s semi-annual Internet Security Threat Report instead of launching large assaults that receive global publicity, hackers have shifted their focus to creating smaller worms. They focus on more customized attacks thereby escaping traditional firewalls and Web based intrusion detection systems.

Michael Murphy, senior vice-president of Symantec Canada thinks that generally, malicious code is becoming smaller and modular so that when it strikes a computer initially it has very limited functionality. Once installed, though, it can download additional code and start doing significant damage.
