According to market projections, U.S. internet advertising spending will reach $12.9 billion in 2005 and $22.3 billion by 2009.

eMarketer projections indicate that in 2005, U.S. internet advertising spending will pass the $10 billion mark for the first time. The adspend will be more than double that of 2002. In 2002 the adspend was $6 billion and in 2005 it is expected to reach $12.9 billion.

In 2009, online adspend is expected to increase by another $10 billion, reaching $22.3 billion. According to David Hallerman, Senior Analyst at eMarketer, “Much of the increase is coming at the expense of other, traditional media channels”.

Some analysts also feel that despite rapid growth, online advertising has not been able to keep up with audience growth. Though adspend rose 32.5 percent in 2004, spending per user rose 27.9 percent.
