Julian Mehnle has asked Internet Engineering Steering Group to revoke approval of Microsoft’s anti-spam strategy, Sender ID Framework.

Sender Policy Framework Council member, Julian Mehnle has written to Internet Engineering Steering Group to revoke approval of Microsoft’s Sender ID Framework specifications.

The Internet Engineering Task Force’s IETF) leadership Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) is considering a request from the developers of the Sender Policy Framework (SPF) email authentication technology to revoke approval of Microsoft’s “conflicting” Sender ID Framework (SIDF) specifications.

Both SIDF and SPF propose ways to identify the senders of email, which could be a useful tool to mitigate spam, phishing and other email attacks.

According to Julian Mehnle, “The conflicting part of the Sender-ID specification disrespects the substantial history the SPF specification has outside the IETF. Through its decision, the IESG also ignores SPF’s deployed base.”
