A blog (a shortened form of "web log"), as originally conceived, is web site that a person uses to record his/her thoughts on a topic. Sometimes blogs are very personal, intended only for family and close friends.

Other blogs are intended for a general audience interested in a particular topic the author blogs about, which could be a hobby (baseball, coin collecting, extreme sports, etc.) a technology or business topic, a cultural, political or religious area, or any other topic.

These general audience blogs can be sponsored by a company or other organization and maintained by multiple people.

Blogs can be maintained on a privately owned website or on a public blogging platform, such as blogger.com,tumblr.com or WordPress.com.

There are multiple software platforms that are available that make it simpler to maintain a blog on a private website and make it easy for visitors to navigate its entries.

Among these platforms, WordPress has become the most used. It is a free platform and has many software add-ons (known as plug-ins) that extend its functionality. (There are also "themes" available for WordPress, which changes the appearance of a WordPress site.) As a result of the many things that can be done to extend the function WordPress offers, it has been used for many sites that are not blogs in the original sense, but are, instead, general purpose websites.
